Which is the best pet food - raw or kibble?

"What is the best food for pets?"

This is one of the most common questions we receive at Treats Unleashed when discussing foods with pet parents. But there is a key word missing from that initial question, so let's rephrase: What is the best food for my pet? See, all pets are different and have different requirements from their foods to match their lifestyle. Similarly, we want to help you find the food that fits your lifestyle as well, so you and your pet are both set up for success. With this in mind, let's discuss the benefits of adding raw to your pet's diet.

Frozen raw diets are designed to be the closest option to your pet's ancestral diet, meaning what their wild animal counterparts would eat in nature. These are primarily meat, organ and some bone (around 75-85%), that are then rounded out with fruits, vegetables, and vitamins to create a complete diet (15-25%). All pet foods must meet a nutritional standard as a complete diet according to AAFCO.* Raw is a fantastic option for many pets, as it is less processed and easier to digest compared to most dry diets. It also offers a high moisture content, which is great for dogs and extremely important for cats. Raw diets also have the benefit of producing less pet waste than your standard kibble. If your pet has multiple allergies or higher food sensitivities, frozen raw diets can be a wonderful choice, as they feature fewer ingredients. As always, please consult your vet before making any major diet changes.

Raw foods also take a bit more time and preparation than your standard dry food. All meals must be thawed in your refrigerator overnight to be ready for your pet to eat. Raw diets must be served in a non-porous container or bowl, such as stainless steel, to avoid the risk of bacteria being built up. You must wash your hands and your pet's food container regularly to also mitigate the risk of bacteria contamination. These are all common, safe handling protocols that are easy to follow, but they do take more time and planning. We recommend portioning out your pet's meals in advance, using sandwich bags, so you can just thaw what you need from the freezer. (A little food prep goes a long way!)

A great way to dip your toe into the waters of raw feeding would be in a supplemental capacity. This is also a great way to introduce a new food! Primal Pet Foods feature multiple options for whichever level of raw you are ready to try with your pet. Gauge your pet's interest with some freeze-dried raw, bone broth, or goat's milk. When you are ready to try a frozen raw meal with your pet, remember to integrate a new food slowly and that it can take time for them to get interested.
