Summer Safety Tips for Dogs

Posted on 06.28.2022

Summer is a great time to get out and explore nature or just go on adventures with your dog. No matter where the journey takes you, even if that's just around the block, you'll want to be prepared for what the season has to offer. Here are some Summer Safety tips for your pet, along with some of our favorite recommendations.

Hot Pavement - As the temperatures can approach triple digits this time of year, pavement can be extremely hot for your dogs paw pads to the point of being unsafe. Blisters and burns can happen even faster than you would think on hot sidewalks, driveways and streets. Check the pavement with your bare hand before going for a walk. If you can't hold it to the ground for 10 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Early morning and evening are the best times for a walk in cooler temps. Keep your pup's paws moisturized and healthy with a paw cream, such as Earth Animal's Herbal Skin Relief Balm. Being well hydrated inside and out can help reduce the risk of heat related injuries.

Hot Cars - If you are taking your pup with you in the car, please take them with you when you park your car. On regular days over 80 degrees, the inside of your car can be up to 30-40 degrees hotter than the temperatures outside in just 15 minutes. That means it doesn't take long for anyone, human or pet, to overheat. When the temperatures are typical Summer days in the 90s, the temperature inside of your car can be very dangerous, very quickly. It's also important to keep your dog secure in the car while you are driving. Try Kurgo's direct to seatbelt tether, or their harness and tether combos!

Swimming - Some dogs love to swim. Some dogs are great swimmers. These are not necessarily the same dogs. Keep your pet cool, safe and stylish with a life jacket from Outward Hound, available in-stores! Most pups love the water, but some are a little wary. Try some water activities in the backyard before you take your dog to the lake and see how it goes.

Take a Hike - Taking in some Nature with your pet and exploring the great outdoors? Hikes are a fantastic way to get exercise and scenic views with your dog. Tell the insects to 'bug off!' with some natural flea and tick prevention from Tropiclean and Earth Animal. If you are going on a bit longer of a drive to reach your hiking destination, check out the full line of Kurgo travel essentials as well. The Gourd water bottle and bowl combo is one of our favorites at Treats Unleashed!

Loud noises! - The Fourth of July might be once a year, but fireworks season seems to go on forever. And there are always the severe thunderstorms of Summer too. If your pup suffers from anxiety due to loud noises, Treats Unleashed has multiple all-natural solutions for your dog. Super Snouts has CBD chews for your pet to ease anxious behaviors, while Earth Animal has Calmness and Emotional Balance tinctures from wild herbs and flower extracts for calming aids. Pet Releaf CBD chews will be arriving on July 1 as well! All CBD products can be found in-store only.

We’re not veterinarians. Treats Unleashed staff are well educated, and our writing is well-researched, but neither the advice of a Treats Unleashed staff member nor reading Treats Unleashed's written materials can substitute for visiting a veterinarian. We offer carefully chosen, natural solutions, but we believe that veterinary conditions should be diagnosed and treated by professionals.
