What Pet Food is Good for Allergies?

Posted on 01.04.2022

Does something just seem off about your pet's diet?  Your pet could be itchier than usual, disinterested in their bowl, or their coat could appear dull and thin. All of these could be signs of dietary troubles and possibly a food allergy. Pet allergies can manifest themselves in many ways from upset stomach to hot spots on their skin. After you talk to you vet about possible causes, Treats Unleashed has a few suggestions to help give your pet more dietary support.

When your pet needs more - At Treats Unleashed, we are big supporters of rotational feeding. This can mean changing the protein source every time you need a new bag of food for your dog or cat. It can also mean changing the types of food your pet eats on a semi-regular basis, such as kibble, wet food, freeze-dried raw, etc. If your pet usually has a bag of chicken and rice kibble, try a bag of beef or fish dry food next time. Rotational feeding not only keeps your pet engaged in their dinner, but also helps establish a more well rounded diet. Changing their protein sources regularly provides your pet with nutritional diversity and can help prevent developing a food allergy later in life. Another great way to balance your pet's meal plan is to add natural supplements, such as bone broth for joint support or goat's milk for an upset stomach.

When your pet needs less - Sometimes less truly is more. If you think your pet has a food allergy based on their current diet, talk to your vet about an elimination diet. An elimination diet means moving your pet to a more limited ingredient food to see what could be causing their allergic reaction. In many cases, this includes eliminating grain, potato, and sometimes even chicken from the ingredients in their food. While you may see some immediate improvements in your pet's well being, it can take 6-8 weeks to see a complete change.

Whether your pet needs more variety or fewer ingredients, we are happy to help you find the right fit for your dog or cat.
