How Much Does It Cost to Feed My Dog?

Posted on 01.25.2022

Sticker shock. We've all experienced this, whether we are shopping for ourselves or for our pets. It's true that the brands of pet food you'll find on our shelves cost more than those you'll find at the supermarket, if you are just comparing the prices of the bag. If you look closer, you'll see in many cases that the cost is the same or only slightly higher when it comes to the cost per meal. How does that work? By comparing the amount of food you feed everyday. Let's take a look at the back of the bag of our Pet Food of the Month, NutriSource, compared to a popular grocery store brand:

NutriSource Adult Chicken and Rice Dry Dog Food - 1.25 cups daily for a 25 lb dog

Popular Grocery Store Brand Adult Chicken and Rice Dry Dog Food - 1.75 cups daily for a 25 lb dog

Now, this may not seem like a huge difference to us, but that is an extra half cup of food a day for your pet. When you buy a 30 lb bag of food, that equates to approximately 150 cups of dry food (~5 cups per pound). Using the recommended feeding guides above, the grocery store bag would get you 86 days of food, while NutriSource would provide 120. That's 39% more meals per bag!

Not only are you getting more meals from a more nutrient dense food, you are also getting better quality ingredients. The first ingredient in every dry food at Treats Unleashed is real, identifiable meat or meat meal. Many of our foods are also loaded with fruits and vegetables for natural vitamin sources, and either healthy grains or grain-free ingredients such as lentils and peas. You'll never find any pet foods at Treats Unleashed with corn, wheat, soy or animal by-products in them. And when you feed less, you'll also notice less waste in your yard - something we can all appreciate.

So, take a look at the back of your pet's dry food bag. Or we can help you look at it together and find a new food that works best for your pet. They will appreciate the taste, and you will appreciate the savings in more ways than one.

We’re not veterinarians. Treats Unleashed staff are well educated, and our writing is well-researched, but neither the advice of a Treats Unleashed staff member nor reading Treats Unleashed's written materials can substitute for visiting a veterinarian. We offer carefully chosen, natural solutions, but we believe that veterinary conditions should be diagnosed and treated by professionals.
