Summer Safety – It’s hot out there!

Summertime means hot dogs, and we don’t just mean on the grill! While nicer weather gets your pup outside more often, higher temperatures can put your pup at higher risk of overheating. Here are some quick tips and facts to help keep your pets safe all season long:

Car ride? Take your pet inside with you! – Inside an unventilated car, the temperature is 20 degrees higher than the outside air temperature in just ten minutes. So, even on a nice 75 degree day, in a car with the windows up, the temperature is 95 in ten short minutes. In 30 minutes, that temperature can be 35-40 degrees hotter than the outside air! This can lead to serious injury or potentially fatal. If you take your pup with you on a car ride in the Summertime, make sure they can go inside with you. You’ll both be happier!

Keep the water cool and plentiful – Dogs need plenty of water on a regular basis, and more so to keep cool on a hot day – just like us! Make sure your pups have lots of cool water indoors, and especially while they are outside. Adding a couple of ice cubes can help maintain the water temperature. Check on the water level often. Remember, the more water they drink, the more trips they’ll need outside!

Too hot to “hand”le? – Imagine walking barefoot on your driveway during a warm day. That’s what it’s like for your dog’s paw pads! Generally, if it’s too hot for you to be outside, it’s too hot for your dog to be outside for very long. Before going on a walk, check the pavement temperature with the palm of your hand. If you can’t hold it on the surface for 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog to take a walk. Try going around the block earlier or later in the day to avoid peak temperature times. If your pup’s paws seem a bit blistered or worn, consider some paw cream to moisturize them.

Cool Treats & Toys – If your pup likes to be outside when it’s warm, try a cold treat to cool them off! Treats Unleashed has Pup Cups, Frozen Raw Bones, and Frozen Toys for your pets available at all of our shops. Frozen bones are a particular favorite, as they also provide a dental health boost as well! And don’t forget to keep that water bowl fresh and full!!
